North West Motorway Police tweeted that the child had been seen in lane one of the southbound carriageway between junctions 23 and 22.
It warned: ‘Taking reports of a child walking in lane one of M6 southbound between J23-22.
‘Approach with care and follow instructions on gantry.’
It also asked drivers not to ignore signals.
Police have since confirmed the child was picked up by officers.
They tweeted the child was ‘safely in the back of the patrol car now’ but added that officers were still dealing with the incident at the scene.
