Southbank Winter Market, London

Where: Belvedere Road, Waterloo
Why: Markets, pop-ups and Christmas shows should provide a feast for the senses. Traders from around the world are bringing an array of handmade goodies and street food
The Southbank Winter series (until Jan 6) will also bring family shows such as Circus 1903 and Rumpelstiltskin and an array of other entertainment.

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market
When: Until Dec 23
Where: Victoria Square. This year an additional market will be held at Birmingham Cathedral (St Philips)
Why: This firm fixture in the city’s calendar boasts more than 80 stalls, and boasts being the “largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany or Austria”. Pretzels, Schnitzel, Bratwurst, almonds, Gluhwein, Weissbier… mouth watering much?
Cardiff Christmas Market
When: Until Dec 23 (Mon-Sat – 10am-6pm; Sun – 10am-5pm; late-night shopping until 7pm on Dec 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22)
Where: Cardiff Castle
Why: Organisers promise an “exciting and eclectic ” mix of both new and returning exhibitors plying their original, handmade products.

Where: City Hall gardens
Why: Against the backdrop of Belfast’s City Hall, the gardens are transformed into a village set-up with stalls including continental cuisine as well as clothing, arts and crafts
A vintage carousel, helter skelter and Santas’s Grotto are among the other draws to this Christmas cracker of a market.

Why: Manchester will be peppered with more than 300 festive stalls, dotted across the city. And it’s not only German fare on offer – Hungarian goulash, Spanish paella and trad hog roast will all get your stomachs rumbling on a deliciously festive amble around
